ORGANIC WASTE
Organic waste is handled at public compost locations set up within town limits, as well as at smaller individual composters placed near the residences that have vegetable patches and gardens. The town also operates a door-to-door waste removal service. The photograph shows a public composting area located near the local school.
DOOR-TO-DOOR PICK UP SYSTEM
Within town limits, organic, plastic, paper and the unsegregated waste are picked up door-to-door. Plastics and organic waste are removed twice a week, while paper and unsegregated waste are removed once a week.
In the surrounding rural area, waste is segregated in purpose-built recycling cabins.
GLASS, BATTERIES, CLOTHES, OIL…
All these waste fractions are collected in the containers placed for this purpose within town limits.
URBAN TRASH CANS
All the trash cans in Zaldibia are designed to differentiate waste.
RESIDENTS’ PARTICIPATION
A number of meetings with local residents were organised before the implementation of the door-to-door waste removal system to inform the residents and let them take part in this process.
The photograph above shows some residents of Zaldibia applauding the removal of containers which were used as part of the old waste management system.
EXPANDING THE MODEL OF ZALDIBIA
The local method of handling waste seems to be quite promising and is attracting visitors who wish to learn from Zaldibia’s experience. The photograph shows a visit from Pontevedra.
